Also, its color low in the sky is owing to stuff in the air--pollution, dust, volcano output when that happens, etc.

Nevertheless, I'll be out there, since this is a stand-in-your-driveway event, not a drive-away-from-light-pollution event. I expect it to be fine.

Re: Look!
On the other hand, from my narrow perspective as a high-altitude hiker, it suggests alpine trailheads should be accessible about 4-6 weeks earlier than normal. Last year was a VERY late start to the high-altitude hiking season, so we should be able to get in a lot more vertical gain this season.

Re: Colorado snowpack plummets nearly one-third in dry, warm March

Not good! These are not people that just go out one day and light a fire and walk away. The position they are in is one that is very unenviable. They get no credit when these burns go to prescription, get no credit for the incalculable homes and lives they save every year and get all the blame when things go bad (deservedly so). Quit acting like these people are some government chronies in mansions on the hill and take the time to learn what they do, and how little they are paid to do it.

Re: Live Blog: Lower North Fork Fire 100 percent contained

I burn a lot of slash and I have a permit to do so. Had this fire been started by anybody else but the state they would of been prosecuted to the full extent of the law, sued and probably jailed. And the state gets to get away with saying "SORRY?" the guy as he says it sounds phony like he HAS to say it and yet knows that there ain't crap these people can do to them.I have already lost faith as many fellow Colorado residents have in our state, and after this??? Right I will ONLY trust our state officials to pass the buck AND the blame to ANYONE but themselves for the way our state is going . IF they were REALLY sorry those who made the decision to start a fire on a KNOWN high fire day would be stepping up to the plate and pulling money outta THEIR pockets... not the taxpayers pockets and making this right. Their mother and fathers should be very proud of them for hiding behind the fact they are state officials who RUN and HIDE from the decisions that was made that day.

Re: Live Blog: Lower North Fork Fire 100 percent contained

Sorry - for further clarification, the evac area along Pleasant Park Road is closer to High Grade.

Re: Live Blog: Lower North Fork Fire 100 percent contained

Pleasant Park Road runs generally in a northwest / southeast direction; it connects from US Hwy. 285 up near Hwy. 73, and runs in a general southeast direction and connects with High Grade. Sound familiar. 200 acre fire in northern Minnesota consumed 100,000 acres after the Foreset Service started a back burn on Labor Day last year. My dogs are so excited when we go up but this day, they seemed very antsy especially Sadie, my boxer mix, running south and then back to me. I thought perhaps there was a bear or mountain lion in the forest but what I think now is they were smelling smoke. We only stayed about an hour and went home and this was the very first time we spent so little time there. I didn't notice anything but Sadie and Lollipop sure did. They knew something very bad was happening.

Re: Live Blog: Lower North Fork Fire 100 percent contained

Interactive map of the fire - closures, perimeter, and resources: http://www.brendansweather.com

Re: Live Blog: Lower North Fork Fire 100 percent contained

My mom lives off of S Ridge & Pleasant Park Rd.
Lower North Fork Fire is predominantly burning on the ground with some fire in the tree canopies. Officials anticipate the fire to burn for an extended period of time. Current winds are at about 20 MPH – 30 MPH and are blowing in all directions.

Homes have been lost in the Kuester Road area but there is no confirmation on the number of structures affected. Fire crews will be out all night focusing on structure protection.

Spotting has been seen ½ - 1 mile ahead of the fire which indicates the fire is still active and moving.

A Type 1 Incident Management Team has been ordered and should be on site in the next day or two. Air support is also on order but that will be purely dependant on the wind. Tomorrow’s fire behavior: Erratic fire behavior will most likely result due to swift and shifting winds.

Conifer High School Shelter has 90 people and 65 dogs on site. Shelter at Chatfield High is functioning as an information clearing house but is also available for sheltering evacuees.

Due to extreme fire conditions, entrance into affected areas to rescue animals is prohibited. If you need help or have animals in need of evacuation, call the Jeffco Sheriff’s Office for assistance at 303-271-0211.

That wraps up the current update on the Lower North Fork Fire. The next media briefing will be at 630 at the Elk Creek Fire Station 1.
